The time has come for me to leave the cake world. Are you ready to take over and transform your passion into an income? I created Sugar Treat in 2015 from my home licensed kitchen so I could spend more time with the kids. Demand kept increasing year after year, to the point of having to turn down orders from being overcapacity. Buying this family business includes:

  • Website with over 53,000 views per year
  • Google Business listing with over 10,000 views per month
  • More than 50 enquiries per month (online enquiries and phone calls)
  • Over 530 followers on Instagram
  • Over 1,730 followers on Facebook (67% from Australia, 615 from the Gold Coast)
  • Mailing list with 580 contacts
  • Registered business name and logo
  • Quote and invoice template
  • Bookkeeping spreadsheet
  • Tools and equipment (optional, see list below)
  • Recipes (optional, see list below)
  • Business coaching (optional, see details below)
  • Baking and decorating coaching (optional, see details below)

Those views and enquiries numbers are organic as no paid marketing is used at the moment. Enquiries could increase with marketing and promotion. Sugar Treat ranks 5th on Google for “Cake Gold Coast” and 1st for “Cake Surfers Paradise”.

I operated Sugar Treat alone from home therefore no leased premises or shop front are included in the sale and there are no employees. You will require a food licence by appropriate legislation (usually city council).

The business was located in Surfers Paradise and generated many enquiries from tourists visiting the Gold Coast. However, you could operate the business from anywhere.

You could also consider wholesale to cafes. I have been contacted for wholesale multiple times but had to decline as I was over capacity.

Sales and profit

The sales and profit generated from the business will depend on how you quote enquiries and how many hours you want to work. The profit margin increased over time as I acquired tools in the first years and as I became more confident in pricing my work. For example, the profit margin was 41% in 2016 and 78% in 2019. By working part-time (1 or 2 days per week), you could achieve $1,000 income per month. Profit and loss statements available on request.

Running costs

Apart from the ingredients and packaging, the yearly costs to consider are:

  • Business name ($37 or $87 for 3 years, paid till 7/4/2022)
  • Website domain mapping and registration ($24)
  • Public liability and product insurance ($50 with ACADA membership of $78 per year)
